The family tree identifies Sir Humphrey Gilbert (1539-1583) as a direct line ancestor. Gilbert had a half-brother, the even better known Sir Walter Raleigh.

The idea of colonization languished until 1602 when Captain Bartholomew Gilbert, son of Sir Humphrey, was the next family member to make the attempt.

Bartholomew’s brother Raleigh Gilbert became involved in the exploration/colonization business in 1606, when Queen Elizabeth’s successor James I founded the Virginia Company.

Bartholomew Gosnold, co-Captain with Bartholomew Gilbert on the discovery/exploration voyage to Cape Cod and the Islands, subsequently joined the London Company’s founding voyage to Jamestown.
